Argentat, along the river Dordogne, was an important commercial port for many centuries. Flat boats called « gabares » were filled with wood, leather and oil and set off from Lestourgie quay. The town’s old fashioned stone paved quays are lined with old houses with pepper box fortifications, towers and thackstone roofs : all the charm of France’s historical villages.
